WHAT IS A NAMING CEREMONY?

A naming ceremony, or "welcome" ceremony is an non-religious or non-denominational ceremony which is designed in partnership with a celebrant. A naming ceremony consists of poems, story telling, music and rituals which are created with your family in mind. The ceremony can incorporate your family and friends in a unique way that will create special memories for you and your little one.

WHERE CAN I HAVE THE CEREMONY?

A naming ceremony can be conducted in your home, a hotel, outside or any venue of your choice, for example a restaurant, community centre, golf club etc. in the event that you would like to celebrate with a meal afterwards.

WHO IS INVOLVED?

"It takes a village to raise a child"

Your ceremony can include your "village". Grandparents and "guide parents" (the name given to god parents in a non-religious ceremony) can play a special role in a naming ceremony. Uncles, aunts and the baby's cousins can also become involved in the rituals (and fun!)

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN A CEREMONY?

MUSIC

POETRY

PROMISES

RITUALS

Music can be an important part of the ceremony, parents may chose songs that they play to their child (even songs played to them before they were born). Parents may choose songs that are important to them, or that were played at their wedding. Live music can be performed at a naming ceremony or simply played via a speaker on Spotify.

Poetry, prose and quotations can enhance a naming ceremony. You may have some favourites that are meaningful for you, passed down through the generations or encourage your family members to write a few lines that represent their wishes for the new arrival.

Promises and vows can be made by parents and "guide parents" committing to supporting and loving your baby throughout their lives. These vows can be customised to represent your values and aspirations.

Rituals can be a beautiful way to involve everyone present, "Wish Stones" can be held by everyone - placing their love and well wishes into the stone, which is kept as a keepsake.

A compass can be added which can be "warmed" by friends and family to guide the baby on their life journey.

A Tree Planting ritual is also a popular way to mark the occasion and grow with the child.  Soil from your loved ones gardens can be incorporated

A "Sand Blending" ritual can be a beautiful addition, representing blended families or the many generations present.

Finally a "Wish Tree" where family and friends write down wishes and hang them on the tree for your little one to keep.
